Dr. Harris uses an integrative therapeutic framework largely comprised of solution-focused, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral and insight-oriented modalities tailored to the unique needs of her clients. She recognizes that spirituality can play an important role in clients’ lives and for those who desire it, incorporates it into the therapeutic process. As a woman of the Christian faith, she is better equipped to support women who wish to use biblical principles to guide their decision-making and self-care. However, her practice and personal philosophy is one inclusive of all women.
Her passion for helping women evolved from her own challenges as a mother, wife, sister, aunt, author, professor, psychologist, and professional with a “Superwoman” lifestyle fraught with stressful and competing role demands. Dr. Harris connects with her clients from an empathetic, compassionate, and nonjudgmental perspective. She is passionate about empowering women to leverage their strengths, skills and resources to make wise decisions for their lives.
Dr. Harris completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS and her graduate training at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, where she received both her Master of Science and Doctorate of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology. Her clinical training emphasized the techniques of psychological assessment and conduct of psychotherapy with adults as well as health psychology, while her research was devoted to factors that affect individual health behaviors. Her research evolved to include the study of stress management interventions, health perceptions, and, currently, the Superwoman syndrome. She is an active member of the Georgia Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association. She coauthors the Psychology Today blog, For the Souls of Black Folks. A favorite quote is,
"Life is not about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself."
~George Bernhard Shaw
